German Shepherd Mix: Size, Coat, Colours and What DNA Shows

'Shepherd mix' is a stock label on shelter dogs, and German Shepherd ancestry is genuinely common: about one in ten shelter dogs in a large DNA study. Here's how big a German Shepherd mix gets, how its coat and colours are inherited, and how to read a German Shepherd result.

By PuppyGenes · How we research and write our guides

A German Shepherd mix is any dog with German Shepherd ancestry. "Shepherd mix" is one of the most familiar labels on shelter dogs, and German Shepherd ancestry really is common: in a DNA study of 919 shelter dogs, it turned up in about one dog in ten. A German Shepherd mix's size, coat and colour depend on what else is in the mix, and the breed's signature patterns, sable and black-and-tan, only show when the other parent's genes allow them. Our guide to the German Shepherd Dog covers the breed itself in depth.

How common is German Shepherd ancestry?

A study that DNA-tested 919 dogs at shelters in Phoenix and San Diego found German Shepherd in 8.5% of the dogs at one shelter and 12.0% at the other, among the 10 most common breeds at both. In the dogs that had it, German Shepherd made up about 25 to 30% of their ancestry on average.

Labels are less reliable than DNA. At the San Diego shelter, where staff guesses were compared with the DNA results, staff matched at least one breed in about two-thirds of dogs, but both main breeds in only about one in ten. Upright ears and a dark saddle can earn a dog the "shepherd mix" label whether or not it has German Shepherd ancestry. Our guide to DNA testing a rescue dog covers what the shelter studies found.

How big will a German Shepherd mix get?

German Shepherds are large dogs: the CKC gives an ideal height of about 64 cm and a weight of 34 to 36 kg for males, with females somewhat smaller. A German Shepherd mix can end up anywhere between its parents' sizes, though not necessarily in the middle, because size depends on which size genes each puppy inherits. A cross with a Labrador or a Husky usually gives a medium to large dog, while a cross with a small breed can land well below German Shepherd size.

Our guide to how big a mixed-breed puppy will get explains how to combine the parents' sizes with growth checks and genetics, and our guide to when dogs stop growing explains why bigger mixes keep filling out for longer.

Coat and shedding

German Shepherds have a short, dense outer coat over a soft undercoat, and that undercoat sheds. Most German Shepherd mixes shed too, unless they inherit low-shedding genes such as furnishings from the other side. Our guide to the genetics of shedding explains how it works.

Some German Shepherds grow long, plush coats. Long hair usually comes from recessive variants of the FGF5 gene, so it only shows in a mix when the puppy inherits a long-hair copy from both sides. Our guide to long coats covers the odds.

Colours in German Shepherd mixes

German Shepherd colours come from the agouti gene, which sets where black and tan pigment go:

  • Sable (tan or grey hairs tipped with black) is dominant over the other two.
  • Black-and-tan, including the classic saddle, comes from the tan-points version, which a 2011 study traced to a short DNA insertion.
  • Solid black in German Shepherds is recessive; a 2004 study found an agouti variant in black German Shepherds that likely explains it.

In a mix, those patterns only show if the puppy can make black pigment and doesn't inherit a dominant-black copy from the other parent. A dominant black variant at a separate gene makes the whole coat solid and hides the agouti pattern, which is one way a German Shepherd mix can come out solid black. A puppy that inherits a red-yellow-only copy of MC1R from both parents is red-yellow all over, which hides the pattern too: a Golden Retriever always passes one on, but the German Shepherd parent would have to pass one as well. Our coat colour hub explains the order in which these genes act.

Temperament

The CKC describes the well-bred German Shepherd as stable, sensible, intelligent, quick to learn, loyal and protective of its home. It was bred to trot all day, so it needs a lot of exercise. A German Shepherd mix may share some of those traits, mixed with tendencies from its other breeds. Breed is a loose guide to any one dog, though: a 2022 study of more than 18,000 dogs found breed explains only about 9% of behavioural differences between individual dogs.

Reading a German Shepherd result in a DNA report

The PuppyGenes breed ancestry section estimates a dog's breed mix as percentages, including any ancestry that couldn't be resolved. A few pointers:

  • Around 50% German Shepherd suggests one German Shepherd parent, and around 25% a German Shepherd grandparent, though real results rarely land on exact fractions. Our guide to breed percentages explains why.
  • A shepherd look without German Shepherd DNA is possible in mixed dogs, because ear shape and saddle-like markings turn up in many breeds.
  • Closely related breeds are harder to separate, as are small contributions, especially where reference data are limited.

Frequently asked questions

How big will a German Shepherd mix get?
It depends on the other parent. German Shepherd males weigh about 34 to 36 kg, so a cross with another large breed is usually a large dog, while a cross with a small breed can end up well below German Shepherd size.
Is my dog a German Shepherd mix?
Looks are an unreliable guide, because upright ears and saddle-like markings turn up in many breeds. A breed-ancestry DNA test estimates how much German Shepherd, if any, is in your dog.
Why is my shepherd mix solid black?
Either it inherited recessive black from both sides, or it inherited a dominant-black copy from its other parent, which makes the coat solid and hides the German Shepherd's sable or black-and-tan pattern.
Do German Shepherd mixes shed a lot?
Most do. German Shepherds have a dense undercoat that sheds, and a mix sheds noticeably less only if it inherits low-shedding genes, such as furnishings, from its other side.
Can a DNA test tell what my shepherd is mixed with?
A breed-ancestry test estimates your dog's breed mix as percentages by comparing its DNA with reference dogs. Closely related breeds and small contributions are harder to separate, so treat small percentages as estimates.
